Who said Juicing was expensive?

Who said Juicing was expensive?

Big bad of carrots & bananas! 64p yes 64p for both from asdas reduced shelf! Yes the carrots look like something you might feed a horse all broken but that’s not going to matter in your juicer…though the bananas are perfect but they were just singles left from bunches so perfect, I’ve never tried juicing a banana & imagine they would be pretty useless so by all means try but I’m more inclined to blend them and add them to a juice…

So no excuses around fresh produce being expensive! Get scouring for bargains and get juicing

Been a while so here’s a good one…

Been a while so here’s a good one…

Well having a few crazy weeks, doing crazy OCRs at the weekends & doing well at The suffering legends I’ve been juicing no less but I’ve been using old faves…but had no time for research and experimenting…so it’s about time I started this weekend again for your entertainment! whilst this post is not really Juice related it applies to good nutrition, natural remedies and healthy clean fresh nutrition…so what’s the story your asking? ‘Furness get to the point’!!

So as mentioned I’ve been doing several race weekends and in particular the suffering legends which for those of you that don’t know is an extreme OCR based over 2 days and each day I’ve been needing upwards of 4000 calories, don’t ask why? Ask why not!

To try and get 4000 clean calories in is hard especially when your running 3-4 hours a day and travelling to events..so I’ve had to eat poor quality foods!! not recommend by any means…but neither is doing crazy events! Only joking go for it at least once..the event that is…

So anyway have you ever ate really bad quality food burger & chips as an example!!!Yes shock horror I did eat that x2!!!! & your stomach gets irritable? Swollen and uncomfortable? Sounds familiar? Well don’t reach for the rennie because Mother Natures here to help…

Get some Fresh Ginger, yes my best friend, fresh lemons & fresh turmeric (not powder) it looks like below, you should be able to get it in any Asian shop…

Cut your lemon into half then half again put 2 1/4’s in a mug( a travel mug world well) 2 slices of ginger about a thumb size and about 2mm thick and about 1” of your fresh turmeric cut into thin slices (avoid getting on your fingers it stains like buggery!) add all this to your mug (not your face!) and let it stew for about 10 mins, it will taste great and all the above ingredients will settle that bloated tummy…ginger and turmeric have great digestion aiding qualities and are anti inflammatory…a good day of nutrition and 3 cups of this and my poorly tummy was back to normal, so give it a go..& p.s it’s no reason to binge eat to try it out!! There are so many people that struggle with IBS nowadays (me included) this should be a part of your daily nutrition plan, give it a go nothing to loose.

Will an Apple a day really keep the doctor away?

Will an Apple a day really keep the doctor away?

Wives tale or fact??….well I doubt 1 Apple will, especially if your a 20 a day cigarettes puffer or 10 pint a night pub goer or Greggs best fan of its sausage rolls!

But 2 a day as part of a Healthy diet yes it just might assist with reducing your visits to the Docs…so it’s no surprise that the simple Apple makes my superfood number 2!

And combined with ginger is many a people’s basis to a good juice, carrots add a great & popular combination, This morning I’ve myself had Apple, ginger & Avocado which was awesome…

Apples are relatively cheap being a home grown product, last a good while, don’t worry if the skins not perfect it won’t matter in your juicer….Also apples will add a little sweetness to your juices that might need perking up such as mainly greens juices, so get using them they should be a basis to your juice stock cupboard….

Juice Redemption

Juice Redemption

So given that I tried to poison myself and Fiona on Monday night I had to redeem myself & come up with juice Genius

Still on a quest for A sleep ‘Injuiced’ coma I used strawberries as my first ingredient why? Well apart from being lush!

Strawberries make many healthy food lists because of their antioxidants and vitamins, and also because they taste great so it’s easier to start eating more of them. It’s the Vitamin C in strawberries that helps you out in the sleep department, and they have plenty. Oranges are known for their Vitamin C content as well, but are not as well tolerated as strawberries due to their acidity which can cause heartburn or acid reflux when consumed too close to bedtime for some. You may want to try a strawberry smoothie as a nighttime snack that will help you fall asleep without upsetting your waistline.

Some research has shown that they also help wrinkle prevention…but don’t go mad on them as they are high in fruit sugars and wrinkles may be prevented by an ever growing body pushing the wrinkles out!!

So anyway clearly they have more than the nutritional qualities that will add to a good nights sleep did they work, more on that on a bit…

The red peppers give similar benefits as the strawberries according to research are very juicy and made a fair bit of liquid & cauliflower has amounts of Thryptophan in it(the same as in your turkey dinner that makes you nod off like grandpa after Sunday lunch but to what degree is debatable) whilst the cauliflowerlooks fairly fleshy the flower heads as with broccoli are pretty absent of liquid!

So how did it taste? Did I have to call the council again to remove toxic waste…

It was fresh light, with a real red pepper and strawberry zing, but the cauliflower gave it a hint of well raw cauliflower taste nothing over powering but it was there,

8-10 strawberries, 1/3 cauliflower no leaves, & a big red pepper will give you all the nutritional benefits listed and more plus 100 calories, the juice above is only half so 50 calories for me and 50

For Fiona given it was nice and not a juice disaster!….

So did it have sleep qualities? Well on this occasion I woke once in the night and fiona did not wake once!…so this experiment seemed to have some benefits and I had redeemed myself and the juice journey moves on…When I try a another I will add a few more strawberries and red pepper and slightly less califlower or cut off the flower heads for normal consumption and juice just the stalks…or maybe another combo as there’s so much choice…so #letsgetjucing and enjoy the massive health&fitness benefits…Tarah for now

Warning! Don't try this at home Kids!!!

Warning! Don’t try this at home Kids!!!

Well I’ve had my 1st juicing disaster!…but like I said you can learn from my mistakes & laugh at the same time, In theory this juice had all the right ingredients to make a good nutritious juice shot,it contained,A broccoli stalk(no flowerheads) 3 big handfuls of kale,a thumb of ginger,1/2 a lime,1/2 an Avocado and 2 raw garlic cloves…below is how it looked, it looked good, smelt good,so me and Fiona said chin chin cheers & down the hatch it went

Well within 3 seconds I ran to the bathroom with my head in a bucket wanting to be sick! & I have a strong stomach, Fiona ran the other way feeling the same!!…wow this had a real kick in the chest, but steer well away from this combo it wasn’t even the taste, it was obvious too strong it hit my digestive tract and my body wanted to reject it it should have carried a health warning maybe watering it down would have been wise, but I’m laughing now writing this…when experimenting it doesn’t always go smoothly so hopefully tomorrow will be a more successful I don’t fancy that again…how ever I was thinking at the time being sick could have been a good detox! (Only joking) but here’s to a more successful juicing experiment tomorrow

Sleep Injuiced, Surely not? This weeks master plan!

Sleep Injuiced, Surely not? This weeks master plan!

So the products for This weeks Juicing Experiments have been chosen Cauliflower, Red and green peppers, butternut squash, kale, broccoli, strawberries, tomatoes & my 2 all time faves ginger and apples…

This weeks aim is to Juice in the evenings instead of the morning where hopefully I have more time & maybe you do too, and also see if i can find a juice that can aid sleep not grape juice of the alcoholic variety!!! Those that know me will know that I suffer from anxiety and sleep problems as a result,I’ve tried all the normal remedies, warm milk, counting sheep!! To no great avail, so I’m hoping that I can find products that will aid better sleep…so why this produce?

Strawberries, Broccoli & Califlower contain Tryptophan and Serotonin

Tryptophan is that amino acid that is in turkey that everyone blames for the post-Christmas dinner sleep!! This amino acid is used to make the sleep-inducing chemicals melatonin and serotonin (a relaxing neurotransmitter) in the brain. Being an amino acid, tryptophan is most easily found in most animal products, I’ve never tried juicing a turkey fillet!! and frankly that does not sound appealing..so juicing fruit and veg it is then!!

Kale contains Potassium and magnesium, These two minerals are natural muscle relaxants. The following are a good source of both makes sense to aid sleep…

Red peppers,Broccoli,Cauliflower & strawberries are a sources of B vitamins B vitamins are mainly associated as energizers(so good in your pre-workout juice too) For this very reason energy drinks are loaded with them. However, research has found that taking a multivitamin with B’s in it or taking B vitamins directly do not affect sleep negatively. B vitamins may help achieve a good night’s sleep, but they do not alleviate insomnia for all individuals(fingers crossed it works for me)

Melatonin is also associated with good sleep and Cherries contain the highest amounts(but they were too expensive at Asda this week) so another week I will try them, as the day grows darker signaling to our bodies to naturally release melatonin from the pituitary gland right between our eyes. Melatonin is the hormone chemical that controls the body’s internal clock to regulate sleep. Some people find that taking natural melatonin supplements (either by pill or sub-lingual) can help them fall asleep more easily. Melatonin is often used to prevent jet-lag as well as help night-time workers sleep during day-time. Unfortunately, there are only a few natural food sources of melatonin and the concentrations are very low such as in Ginger, apples and tomatoes which I have bought not just on the basis they might aid better sleep but also general health along with a few other regular favourites,so here’s to a week of great Juicing and let’s see what happens= hopefully…#letsgetjucing

Pulp Cakes…yes CAKE is good for you

Pulp Cakes… yes CAKE is good for you

Hi guys So as promised this weekend In between loads of crazy Events with MFC…I’ve managed to put together 2 Cakes using left over pulp from the weekend juices…
One was made with Beetroot(1)Apple(2)ginger(1 thumb)and lemon(1) and cocoa power was added to compliment the mainly beetroot taste plus the extra ingredients talked about below in the making technique, it was a good cake & tasted good, but lacked sweetness as I had ran out of honey & when I mean honey…i’m talking a lower GI honey such as Agave honey

Or a natural sweetener like sweet freedom yes strictly speaking they are not honeys as they don’t come from a bee! But they are far better for you & there brown and sticky like honey!!

These products are not processed such and cheaper honeys or God forbid refined sugar…so please don’t use refined sugar in these cakes as it totally against the Ethics of what it’s all about and your really not loosing out by using a better quality product so it a win win for your body…anyway I won’t bore you to tears with the GI( Glycemic Index) scale today but it is something that’s worth covering another day…

The other cake was made with,Avocado(1)lemon(1) oranges(2)ginger(1 thumb) & lemongrass(1 stalk)…I added sultanas to this one which made it a lot better tasting cake & actually really nice, the Ginger and Lemon grass whist worked well in the juice make the cake a little fibrous…but not nasty so don’t worry it’s wasn’t chewy !!! Again some Natural honey would have made it sweeter, but don’t go crazy with it when you add it…

So how do you make it you might ask? Those who have a natural talent in the kitchen will be great at experimenting with this…but below is how they were made…

For an average cricket ball sized lump of pulp you add 1 cup coconut flour and 1/2 cup tapioca flour to a bowl, there’s the Option to add baking powder here if people want a lighter cake.
Mix dry ingredients together and then mix with the pulp, add cinnamon, nutmeg etc if want more flavour and warmth, Add some coconut oil to the mix (about 2 tablespoons) and half to one cup of honey (depending on how gooey and sweet you want it!) obviously I didn’t add This as had none!!! 1st thing on the shopping list today…
Then add eggs- this is where you have to judge the mix, as it could get too wet here, 4 eggs is a good amount for this size portion, You can leave out 2 yolks if watching calories, Add more flour if it is too sloppy, mix well. Then pop in a lined cake tin and bake for about 15- 20 mins at 180-200 degrees. Check a knife comes out clean then leave to cool and cut up into bite sized chunks!

So how did it look you might ask before you try it yourself.

This was the Beetroot,Apple, lemon & Ginger one, each cube about 1.5” in size & about 70 calories if made as was,but it’s not about the calories more about the quality of the calories…both cakes worked out roughly the same

This was the Avocado,Orange,Lemon,Ginger & Lemon grass one, a far better cake and i’m still digging into it today with a cuppa as I write this…

These cakes kept me going all weekend doing a 20k OCR and a half Marathon so they must work…

So get Juicing and get making pulp cakes ,let me know what you think…

This week I will be looking into greens and less fruit Juicing and making snacks at the weekend with the pulps…so keep up to date with how it’s going and #letsgetjuicing

Time Saving

Time Saving

Like most people 1st thing in the morning I run around like a headless chicken and don’t have time to be making juices, but I do as it’s worth it,But there’s a little time saver that will help!, at this point I must add whilst I’m not against the making of juices the night before but the nutrientional benefits will be less and taste will not be a fresh & be less appealing to the eye

1 fresh beetroot, thumb of ginger,1 green and 1 red Apple & a lemon, all chopped the night before and placed in the fridge for the next morning, the nutrional value lost will be neglible

The finished product had a real nice flavour & obviously the beetroot took priority in the colouring but balanced out the ginger and lemon well and the apples have it sweetness, about 40 calories in this juice shot 21% of my daily vitamin c, but all of the produce made 4 x this amount so roughly 84% of your daily vitamin c and a healthy contribution of potassium..,it gave me a real morning boost and a good energy boost

The lest over pulp was kept and was experimented with in a cake! Which I will share with you another day

Try this juice see what you think

Juicing Superfood No1

Juicing Superfood No1

Ginger, I used to hate the stuff bar having it in a Thai green curry, but now I have to fight myslef to avoid putting it in most juices I do,I will share with you my favourite apple & ginger or pineapple and ginger shot, which I love 1st thing in the morning tastes great and fills your body will aliveness and zing to face the day…so why is ginger so good?? Here’s 9 good reasons to get stuck into a bit of Ginger! Be it in your juice or in your life…

  1. Haven’t been feeling hungry? Eat fresh ginger just before lunch to stoke a dull appetite and fire up the digestive juices.
  2. Ginger improves the absorption and assimilation of essential nutrients in the body.
  3. Ginger clears the ‘microcirculatory channels’ of the body, including the pesky sinuses that tend to flare up from time to time.
  4. Feeling airsick or nauseous? Chew on ginger, preferably tossed in a little honey.
  5. Can’t stop the toot-a-thon? Gas—oops—guess what?! Ginger helps reduce flatulence!
  6. Tummy moaning and groaning under cramps? Munch on ginger.
  7. Reeling under joint pain? Ginger, with its anti-inflammatory properties—can bring relief. Float some ginger essential oil in your bath to help aching muscles and joints.
  8. Just had surgery? Chewing ginger post-operation can help overcome nausea.
  9. Stir up some ginger tea to get rid of throat and nose congestion. And when there’s a nip in the air, the warming benefits of this tasty tea are even greater!
